Double win for Tambay in Barcelona.
Barcelona was a very good place for BMW Junior driver Adrien Tambay (FR/Eifelland Racing). He won the first two races in the 2008 Formula BMW Europe. On Saturday he finished ahead of Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational) from Barcelona and Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing). On Sunday he won, Gutierrez became second and Juncadella third. The French 17-year-old scored two extra points for two pole positions.
The spectators at the track saw an exciting race on Sunday. Adrien Tambay defended his lead after the start. On lap six a slight collision between Tiago Geronimi (BR/Eifelland Racing) and Jim Pla (FR/DAMS Team) caused a Safety Car Period. After the restart on lap nine Gutierrez, the 2007 Rookie Champion from Formula BMW USA, put leader Tambay, the 2007 Rookie Champion from Formula BMW Germany, under pressure. But Tambay kept his position and was happy with his two podiums. These two wins and two pole positions mean that Tambay is now leading the championship with 62 points, while Juncadella is second on 44 points and Gutierrez is third (44 points).
1st Adrien Tambay (FR/Eifelland Racing):
"It was a tough race for me. I was too slow in the third sector and I was pushing too much there. When the safety car came out, it was good for me. I struggled after the restart and in the first corner Esteban put me under pressure. But the car was good, the tyres' temperatures were perfect and I stayed at the front of the field. On the last lap I was really excited. Two victories - a perfect weekend."
2nd Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing):
"I got myself ready for the start and looked at the data of my team-mate Kazeem. Everything went well and I made up two positions at the start. From position two I tried to overtake Adrien once during the race. But it was difficult and too risky. He closed the door - in a fair manoeuvre - and I decided to take the car home in one piece."
3rd Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational):
"I didn't expect such results for the first race weekend. The race was okay. When Jaafar had to drive through the pitlane because of his jumpstart, I was third. I had a fight with Wittmann. He overtook me, I overtook him. I fought for my position. My father Javier was the first one after the race to congratulate me, yesterday it was Dr. Theissen."
