Setup conditions Barcelona's debut
Flaw-less debut at Barcelona for Kevin Gilardoni in the season opener of the Formula BMW Europe 2009. The young driver for Fisichella Motor Sport did not commit any mistakes despite suffering setup problems throughout the weekend that influenced his performance.
Qualifying on Saturday gave Gilardoni the twentieth position on the starting grid of both races; the Italian driver, in race one, avoided with intelligence all the risks of turn one getting back lap by lap up to the eleventh position. In the subsequent technical briefing all data available have been analyzed and confronted with racing sensations to improve consistently the setup.
The single seater improved a lot in race two: despite lap times were on average about three tenths higher than those of race one, Gilardoni scored a best time seven tenths faster than his best qualifying lap. The sixteenth final position did not award him with points he hoped for, but gave clear indications on the potential available.
"The outcome of the weekend could have been way better, but despite this we have all elements to be optimist. I accumulated experience concluding both races and in race two, when the car was more balanced, I was much closer to the lap times of fastest drivers. After the first racing weekend I have to say that what I was expecting during winter has been confirmed: Formula BMW Europe is a very tough championship, but as emerged from tests we have what it takes to do a good job. I think that staying within the top ten can be a realistic objective, not an easy one for the first year though. Next week we will be back on track at Budapest to work again on the setup, before the second round of the season at Zandvoort".
