Round 2, Zandvoort : Must do better!
This weekend DAMS raced in the second round of the Formula BMW Europe Championship. Its drivers were Jim Pla, already with the team last year, and its two rookies, Javier Tarancon and Come Ledogar.
Drivers and engineers had a few problems finding the best setups for the cars on qualifying. The DAMS drivers were badly placed on the grid and this handicapped them in the two races this weekend. However, the team used the event getting to know the car better, while the drivers learned the specific type of driving required for the BMW single-seater.
In the end, the team came away with only a few points, but it was good preparation for the next round on the Silverstone circuit on 19th -- 21st June.
Eric Boullier, team manager: "It was a difficult weekend for both team and drivers. We didn't really manage to get the best out of our package despite everybody's best efforts, and we only scored a few points. We used Zandvoort as a real live test session. This will help us arrive at Silverstone well prepared, and we'll be on the pace right from the world go!"
Race 1: 17th on the grid, 19th at the finish.
Race 2: 16th on the grid, 7th at the finish.
9th in the championship with 28 points.
"The weekend got off to a bad start for me and my grid position compromised my chances in the race. We managed a good damage limitation exercise by scoring points in the second round. We lacked that little extra this weekend, but we were able to test new solutions, which seem to point in the right direction. So we're still optimistic."
Race 1: 15th on the grid, 11th at the finish.
Race 2: 14th on the grid, 8th at the finish.
8th in the championship with 30 points.
"My weekend was a fairly complicated one. In the first race my car lacked grip and it was not very well set up. I had problems bringing it home to the flag. Things went better in the second round. I scored a few points, but my aim will be to fight at the front this weekend."
Come LEDOGAR Race 1: Last on the grid (penalty), 18th at the finish. Race 2: last on the grid (penalty), 14th at the finish. 19th in the championship with 6 points.
"I had a good qualifying session but unfortunately I was hit with a penalty, which meant I started last in both races. In these conditions I pushed really hard. I made a great start in the first race and I pulled back a lot of positions, but I went off and that handicapped me. In the second I failed to get my tyres up to the right temperature. I finished fourteenth and scored a few points. So the weekend wasn't totally negative as we made a lot of progress in understanding the car. We're well armed for Silverstone!"
