Rotterdam, 12th March 2004. Dutch New Zealander Chris van der Drift has signed for Team Rosberg to compete in the 2004 Formula BMW ADAC championship.
Chris van der Drift is seen as one of the most promising drivers from New Zealand. This year he will graduate from go-karts to the prestigious BMW ADAC series which events are largely held in the same weekends as the DTM and F3 EuroSeries. Last year, the 12-time(!) New Zealand go-karts champion came to Europe to further develop his talents. The young Vandy Motorsport driver has been raised in New Zealand, but like his parents also has a Dutch nationality.
Both Chris and his parents will permanently emigrate to the Netherlands in short notice .
First contacts between Chris and Team Rosberg date back to last year, when the 17-year old driver took part in a scholarship-program at the Valencia racetrack in Spain. In a field of 21 participants from nine different countries he managed to classify himself among the final eight contenders, and therefore got noticed by Team Rosberg.
Teammanager Arno Zensen: "During the first Formula BMW test, Chris impressed both me and the team and that's why we decided to contract him for the coming season. He is one of the young newbies who, we expect, will develop fast in this series. It looks like a new frontrunner has arrived!"
Chris: "It all went very quick. After I got my international license in Valencia, I was selected for the scholarship program of BMW in association with ADAC. Because I performed well I will receive factory support and financial backing from BMW. After signing for Team Rosberg, I found myself a home in Neustadt, Germany close to the factory. I think Team Rosberg is a great team which is run by ex- Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg. I think this is the right choice for my career at the moment."
Team Rosberg also competes in the F3 EuroSeries and the DTM championship.
Chris van der Drift wants to show his potential this season and would like to represent both New Zealand and the Netherlands in this series full of young and promising drivers. The Formula BMW car is powered by a 4-cilinder / 16 valves engine (from the K-series motorbikes) and is equiped with a Formula 3 sequential gearbox.
