WEEKEND WITH UPS AND DOWNS FOR THOMAS HYLKEMA AT OSCHERSLEBEN
OSCHERSLEBEN, 27 AUGUST 2007 - Thomas Hylkema has not been able to maintain his series of improving results on the Oschersleben circuit in Germany. The German Formula BMW Championship rookie was a match with the midfield, but the pieces of the puzzle did not fell into place this weekend. In the opening lap of the first race the 18-year old driver had to retire after a collision. In the final race of the weekend Hylkema recovered well, until he was hit by another driver. With a damaged left front wheel he finished the race in sixteenth place. In the championship standings Hylkema is now 23rd with 74 points. Despite missing the first four races Hylkema is fourteenth in the Rookie Cup with 74 points as well.
FREE PRACTICE + QUALIFYING:
The sixth round of the German Formula BMW championship took place as a support event for the FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship). On Friday the only free practice of the weekend took place. For Hylkema it was the second time he drove on the 3.696 meters long circuit, which has been changed in turn 1. Hylkema tried to find the brake points of the track, but had a lot of trouble at turn 1. He ended the 30 minute long session in fifteenth place.
After studying the data Hylkema went into the first qualifying session with more confidence. He went out immediately, but found out not much rubber had been laid down on the circuit yet. When he made his second attempt for a fast lap he was stuck in traffic, this meant he finished the session in fifteenth place. On Saturday the second session was driven. Hylkema stayed in the pit for the first fifteen minutes before getting out to do a flyer. Mainly due to a more aggressive style of taking the corners he managed to improve his time. With a time of 1:32.668 he realised a fifteenth time again.
RACE 01 + 02:
The start of the first race went well for Hylkema. He overtook another driver straight away and was on the inside of another driver going into the second corner. When Mathijs Harkema and Tiago Geronimi coliided, Hylkema had to brake hard to avoid the accident. Unfortunately one of the cars behind Hylkema was unable to avoid him and hit him from behind. A bent rear wheel suspension caused an early retirement for Hylkema.
In the second race Hylkema had a clean start again. He gained a position and was able to match the speed of the other cars. At the Hasseröder-turn Hylkema tried to steer his car into the corner when he was suddenly hit by another competitor. He spun off the track, but was able to rejoin the race. With a damaged left front wheel he was able to finish the race, crossing the line in sixteenth place.
THOMAS HYLKEMA: "I am looking back at this weekend with mixed feelings. After a less positive free practice and first qualifying session I managed to improve my time after thoroughly reviewing the data. This was due to the fact that I braked more aggressively which lead to a higher corner speed. My confidence was given a big blow when I was hit from behind. In race two I was able to recover somewhat so that I will go to the Nürburgring with good confidence. I hope to have luck at my side there!"
