Nick de Bruijn in the points at Zandvoort!
Today Nick de Bruijn scored a respectful fifth place during the ninth round of the 2005 Formula BMW ADAC Championship at the Zandvoort racetrack. On Saturday De Bruijn scored a fourth position during the first race on dutch soil. With this result the Dutchman strengthens his second position in the Rookie Cup. In this class for best newcomers the Vlaardinger now has a total of 197 points. In the Championship de Bruijn is fifth with 105 points.
As a class for young and upcoming talented drivers, the Formula BMW ADAC proved to be a passport to success over the last couple of years. Formula One (test)drivers among whom Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Timo Glock and most recently also Nico Rosberg can all decline. As all races are organised as a supporting programme of both the Formula One World Championship and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) broad media coverage is assured. The use of identical cars, engines, tyres, and fuel for all competitors make sure that the driver is the sole factor for success in this championship.
In his maiden outing on the Dutch circuit the reigning European Formula A Kart champion impressed during the free practices sessions and took third place. Fighting for a good grid position during Friday's qualifying session the young Josef Kaufmann Racing driver took fifth position right at the end of the first official qualifying session. During the final twenty minute qualifying session De Bruijn climbed a position and started in fourth position on Sunday's race.
RACE 01 + 02
During the first race on Saturday afternoon De Bruijn had a great start and held his position. In the race De Bruijn fought out some exciting battles and finished in fourth place on the 4,307 km long track. De Bruijn saw his lead disappear when the safety car joined the track after a collision between Van der Drift and Dzikevic in the Tarzan corner. After the restart de Bruijn tried to catch up with Joao Urbano, but he did not succeed and just missed a podium finish. De Bruijn ended the twelve-lap race in fourth place. During the second race De Bruijn lost a position during the start and finally crossed the line in fifth position.
Nick de Bruijn:" Despite this being the first time that I have been to Zandvoort with a Formula BMW, I am not entirely satisfied with the result. For the weekend I had set myself the goal to finish on the podium, but unfortunately I did not manage to do so. Yesterday I finished in fourth place and for today's race we changed the set-up of the car just a little bit. During the start I did not start that well and dropped back to fifth place. However, I did gain a lot of experience on this technical track with its challenging and fast turns. Luckily, I scored a lot of points for the championship. With one more race weekend at Hockenheim ahead of us I must be able to defend my second place in the Rookie Cup!"
