Weekend with ups and downs for Nick de Bruijn

Spa-Francorchamps, 15th May 2005 -- This weekend Nick the Bruijn had varying success. De Bruijn ended his first race in a eight position and did not finish in the final heat at the Spa Francorchamps racetrack. The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver who had qualified eighth in both qualification sessions, added with this result some valuable points to its total. Nick the Bruijn currently is fourth (34 points) in the 2005 Formula BMW ADAC Championship. The 18-year old driver occupies a third place (57 points) in the rookie championship.

As a racing serie for young talented drivers, the Formula BMW ADAC has proved to be a passport for success in recent years. Formula 1 (test) drivers as Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Timo Glock and recently also Nico Rosberg are examples of that. Because all races are held in Formula 1 and Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) weekends, the series is automatically provided with broad (media) attention. The use of identical cars, engines, tyres and fuel for all participants, guarantees that the driver is the critical factor for success.

At the end of the twenty minute qualification session Nick had a strong performance run. In a competitive field of 25 young talents the Vlaardingen based driver ended in the top eight. In the final qualification session for Sunday's race the 18-year old driver again had to settle in eighth place. Nick the Bruijn was not very happy with his qualifying results.

NICK DE BRUIJN: "I was in second place during free practise and I was not able to score in the two important qualification sessions. Despite the changing conditions we choose for slicks and that initially seemed to be a wise decision. I climbed up the order at the end of the session but eighth place is still disappointing. There are sufficient possibilities here to overtake!"

RACE 1 + 2

The 6,976 kilometer long circu it of Spa-Francorchamps gave the fans and drivers everything it's famous for: excitement, highspeed accidents but above all heavy rainfall! For Nick de Bruijn these unpredictable weather circumstances did not bring the fortune the 18-year old driver had hoped for. Having started on P7 (as third placed Joao Urbano received a penalty for overtaking under a yellow flag in qualifying) De Bruijn lacked the required racepace in order to repeat his podium finish from the Eurospeedway Lausitz due to set-up problems. De Bruijn finished his first race in eighth position. In the second heat on Sunday afternoon De Bruijn started with in eighth position but had to retire in the race. In the beginning of the race he was hit by another driver at the Busstop chicane.

NICK DE BRUIJN: "This weekend had many ups and downs. Despite my disappointing qualifying results, I had a good result with my eighth position yesterday. Today I lost some water from the BMW-engine during the warming up for the second race. My start was not bad because I overtook one car at the first lap. From that position the engine lost a lot of power and I felt back to a position in the midfield. My race was ended when I was hit at the Busstop chicane, which caused me to retire on the spot. Despite this crash I learned a lot and enjoyed this amazing circuit. Spa-Francorchamps is without any doubt the nicest track I have driven on with the difference in heights and tempting fast corners! I already look forward to the next Formula BMW race during the F1 Grand Prix (Nurburgring) where I hope to have luck at my side!
