'Kiwi' takes many points despite a lack of speed at Oschersleben

Oschersleben, 26 June 2005 -- A lack of speed prevented Chris van der Drift repeating his good performance, at Brno 3 weeks ago, on the German track at Oschersleben this weekend. After the 'Dutch' New-Zealander had qualified respectively in fifth and seventh place for the weekends races, he finished the races in fourth and fifth position in round six in the 2005 Formula BMW ADAC Championship. With this result van der Drift added 18 points to his points tally and now has a total of 111 points in the championship standings and remains in third place overall.

QUALIFYING

During both qualifying sessions on Friday afternoon, the previous New Zealand twelve time kart champion lacked outright pace. Under hot conditions (33 degrees) Chris qualified himself in fifth position in the Formula BMW ADAC field with a best laptime of 1:29.175. In the second qualifying session the Team Rosberg driver bettered his first session with a time of 1:28.860, but he didn't improve his position. He earnt seventh place on the grid for Sunday's race.

CHRIS VAN DER DRIFT: "For sure I'm not happy with the result in my second qualifying session. I pushed really hard to improve my time lap by lap, but each time there was a yellow flag situation on the track. On this small and tight circuit qualifying positions are extremely important for the races, as it's really difficult, near impossible, during the races to pass."

RACE 01 + 02

A good start in race one meant the 19-year old driver from Team Rosberg gained a position immediately and fell into 4th place by turn one. As the drivers in front of him were able to get away, 'Kiwi' only had to race himself for the remainder of the 14 lap race. After 25 minutes, van der Drift finally crossed the finish line in fourth position. With this finish on the 3.667 kilometer long track near Magdeburg, van der Drift couldn't close the gap in the championship to current championship leader Nicolas Hulkenberg and Sebastien Buemi. As usual this sea son an excellent start in the second heat allowed 'Kiwi' to gain 2 positions by turn one, then passing Championship leader Hulkenberg at turn one a lap later. However at the end of the second lap Chris lost 4th place back to Hulkenberg down the front straight. Chris had to be content with 5th place giving him eight championship points.

CHRIS VAN DER DRIFT: "I am happy with my points but not entirely satisfied with the results of this weekend. On Friday, I suffered mysteriously during free practice and qualifying with a lack of pace. It is very hard to improve your position during the races on this particular track. The whole weekend my team and I tried to find a solution but I missed too much speed on this track. Nevertheless I'm already looking forward to the next meeting at Norisring where I finished twice on the podium last year!"

The next race in the Formula BMW ADAC Championship takes place in three weeks' time (15th-17th July) on Nuremberg city's street circuit.
