CHANGEABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS CHALLENGE CHRIS VAN DER DRIFT AT NÜRBURGRING
NÜRBURG, AUGUST 07 2005 -- Fitful weather conditions in the German Eiffel brought Chris van der Drift varying success in the eighth round of the 2005 Formula BMW ADAC Championship this weekend. At the 3.629 kilometer long Nurburgring circuit, Van der Drift finished fourth and twelfth in the two races held on Saturday and Sunday. In the championship Van der Drift is now 3 points behind Joao Urbano, who is currently third in the standings.
Changing weather circumstances left Van der Drift guessing what would happen next on Friday. After Kiwi clocked very competitive laptimes during a rain-soaked Free Practise, the Team Rosberg-driver had to give away a little bit as the track dried in the double qualifying sessions. His personal best laptimes of respectively 1:33.060 and 1:32.627 eventually gave him the ninth and twelfth grid positions for the races on Saturday and Sunday.
CHRIS VAN DER DRIFT: "I feel like we've lost time in the twisty first sector today, as the track dried up pretty quick. When we alter our set-up somewhat before tomorrow's race, I'm positive we will be on the pace. But if you would ask me, I'd rather see it raining here the entire weekend, as I've proven to be among the fastest drivers in the wet in this series!"
RACE 01 + 02
An impressive start in the opening race on Saturday afternoon resulted in Van der Drift gaining 4 places after having started from ninth position. By putting pressure on Nick de Bruijn, Vandy saw a chance to overtake his Dutch competitor in the second lap for fourth position. Though Van der Drift chased the lead group flat out in the remaining twelve laps, the Dutch New-Zealander came a few seconds short of finishing on the podium. The second race on Sunday afternoon had a strange start as the race director made it obligatory for all teams to mount wet tyres while the track was almost dry. Soon after the start Van der Drift got caught up in a group of drivers and had no chance to repeat his performance from a day earlier. 'Kiwi' finished the 14-lap race in the same position as he started it: 12th.
CHRIS VAN DER DRIFT: "What a weekend! Saturday I really enjoyed the best possible start of the race and I almost finished on the podium. Today, the weather took over control and I was not able to attack as much as I've wanted. I'm now looking forward to the next race at Zandvoort, which feels also like a homerace for me. I hope to gain enough points to move me into 3rd place in the championship standings over there as well!"
