Lee continues strong form in Formula BMW Asia
Formula BMW Asia series leader Marchy Lee Yin-Kin (Team Meritus) continues his strong form by qualifying first and second in rounds 5 & 6 respectively, at the tight Bira Circuit, Thailand. He was beaten in the second session (round 6) by former Meritus driver Hanss Lin Po-Heng (Belgravia Motorsport). Lee's Meritus team mate Mehdi Bennani continues his strong form by taking the second and third grid slot for the 2 races tomorrow. Hamed Al Fardan (Belgravia Motorsport) will start from third in round 5 and fourth in round 6.
This is the first visit for all 3 Meritus drivers to the Bira circuit, in Pattaya, but they have still put in top performances, thanks partly to Meritus' experience at the track. Last year Meritus scored a 1-2-3 and a 1-2 in the 2 races. "The track is ok, not too big, so we learned it quite quickly. Unfortunately in the second session there were too many yellow flags, so I didn't get the chance to set a really quick lap. I think the races will be close tomorrow, because everyone's times are so close. The track is tight, but there are still places to overtake," said Lee after the second qualifying session.
"The track is quite tight and we are completely surrounded by walls, so I have been more careful so far. It's even hotter here than in Malaysia, but it is not affecting my driving. I am confident about the races tomorrow, and I hope to be fighting for the top step of the podium," said Bennani.
Meritus' third driver, young rookie Nik Iruwan, was pleased with his 8th and 11th place qualifying, but knows he can go quicker, after data analysis shows that he is only slower than the leaders in 1 corner. "The track is quite small and tight, which I think has been preventing me from pushing harder, because if you make one small mistake you will be in the tyre walls. I have been discussing with my engineers and the other drivers, and I hope to be on the pace tomorrow," said Iruwan.
