15 - YEAR - OLD BAMBER FOR FORMULA BMW ASIA

Powerbuilt Racing Team driver Earl Bamber will be absent from the grid when the sixth round of the N.Z. Formula Ford Championship takes place at Taupo over the weekend of 18/19 March.

Instead, Bamber will be racing for Team Meritus at the first round of the Formula BMW Asia Championship at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The championship will be a support event for the Malaysian Grand Prix, a round of the World Formula 1 Championship.

The 15-year old Wanganui student will drive in Asia at the insistence of Team Meritus for whom he has already tested twice in his short motor racing career. Team Meritus initially invited Earl to test their car after watching his performances in the N.Z. Formula Ford Championship. His early testing form has the team keen to secure Earl's services after stand out performances at both the Bahrain International Circuit and Sepang.

The Powerbuilt Racing Team have graciously released Bamber from his duties in the Powerbuilt Stealth at Taupo to enable him to take this international opportunity.

"We have to acknowledge the support of Powerbuilt Tools", said a family spokesperson today. "They have given marvellous support to Earl throughout his motor racing career to date and they have allowed him to take this opportunity. They realise that their decision to allow Earl to drive in Malaysia is of benefit to his career". They have allowed him to race and are backing him in this campaign.

The Formula BMW Asia Championship represents another steep learning curve for the young driver. After finishing 3rd in the World Junior Rotax Finals in the Canary Islands less than a year ago Bamber has now competed at just eight events since stepping into single seater motor racing in the Powerbuilt Stealth. The Formula BMW is a totally different proposition from the Powerbuilt Stealth. It is a "wings and slicks", ground effect car producing around 140 horsepower with a 6 speed sequential gearbox. The car weighs 455 kilogram's and has a top speed of 240 kilometres per hour. Formula 1 drivers such as Ralf Schumacher and Nico Rosberg have appeared in the category before making their way into Formula 1.
