Former Formula Dodge standout Antonio Pizzonia announced that he has joined the Petrobras Junior Team to contest the 2001 F3000 championship. The announcement surprised several who expected the young Brazilian to follow in the steps of young pilots Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen in vaulting to Formula 1 without a stop in F3000.

The 20-year-old earned the ultra-competitive British F3 series championship this past season and fueled speculation that he would jump to Europe's top motor racing circuit after impressive tests with Arrows and Benetton. Pizzonia joins fellow Brazilian Ricardo Sperafico on the team that claimed the F3000 title last season.

"The decision to compete in F3000 is the best one I can take," said Pizzonia. "I will learn much and will certainly acquire an increased knowledge of the circuits. To me F3000 seems to be a good learning ground and I intend on using this to gain access to F1 in 2002."

Pizzonia recently indicated that his plans for the future may also include a position as a test driver with an F1 team, which he could assume without missing time in the F3000 series.

We have something in the bag outside of F3000, which will be a big surprise for everyone," he said. "We haven't signed anything yet, but it should be announced in January."
