Tiago Monteiro (ninth) had a great first race in Formula 3000
From 15th in the grid to the Top Ten in Brazil
Tiago Monteiro had his first Formula 3000 race last Saturday and gave a brilliant performance. He drove well overtaking where he could and finished the 35-lap race in ninth position after a brilliant race with Saelens, Muller and Friesacher, fighting to the Top Ten. He is now looking forward to using this race experience for the second round in Imola in two weeks time. The race winner of the FIA F3000 season's first race was Rodrigo Sperafico in the Durango car. Two other Brazilian's followed him onto the podium, Mario Haberfeld and Ricardo Mauricio.
Tiago Monteiro: "I really wanted to finish the race and my goal was to try and finish in the top ten and I finished ninth so I am really happy with my first race. I had to fight all the way through the race and it didn't seem the time was going because I was always either attacking or defending. The car was really, really constant throughout the race apart from four or five laps when it changed a bit and I had a little understeer. I am really confident now and I have learnt a lot and that's what I needed to do today. The guys did a great job, the car was perfect right up until the end of the race and now I have to work a bit at getting quicker on new tyres during qualifying. It is a shame for Sebastien, he didn't deserve that, but I'm sure he will have a lot of other opportunities."
Team Manager - David Sears: "We had bad luck here last year and then it got much better in Europe so the team are still confident that they have chosen the best drivers to win the championship this year. Tiago Monteiro had a really great first race in Formula 3000 to finish in ninth position with no mistakes and the team are really happy with his progress in F3000. The next race in Imola is a circuit he has already tested at, so he will be looking for a good result there."
