19 and 20 July 2002

Tony makes progress at Magny Cours.

Round 8 of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship took place at Magny Cours with Tony Schmidt finishing 13th and Nicolas Kiesa out of the race after coming together with Derek Hill .

Qualifying started badly as Nicolas and Ricardo Maurizio touched during the opening laps of the first session, this left the PSM Racing Line car with a damaged front suspension and a broken floor. The team repaired the damage in time for the second session but still the tracking was not right which left Nicolas down in 17th position.

Tony Schmidt had a troubled free run in the first session and was confident he could go quicker in the second session, but as it turn out the second session was to be quite a bit slower so he could not improve his time.

For the race both drivers made a good start and circulated together, however on lap 9 Nicolas passed Derek Hill on the entry to the last corner. Hill tried to stay around the outside but as the two exited the corner they touch which sent Hill into a roll.

Nicolas was first on the scene to help Hill from the car, both drivers were unhurt but were disappointed not to have finished the race.

Tony drove a steady race and once in a rhythm he began to set competitive times and achieved his best finish of the year in 13th position

The team now head for Hockenheim for round 9 of the championship, a circuit which is new to all the drivers this year due to the changes in the layout.
