Day 1 - Wednesday 6th March 2002
Testing continued today for Petrobras Junior Team at the Imola circuit in Italy. The team have now received both of their new Lola's so Antonio and Ricardo both had a full day's testing each. At the start of the morning session the track was very wet due to earlier rain and therefore all drivers used wet tyres to begin with. When the track got much drier, drivers moved onto slicks and the fastest times of the morning were set right at the end of the session. Unfortunately Antonio spun off the track towards the end of the morning and finished sixteenth quickest while teammate Ricardo was eighth. With the track having fully dried out through the lunch break this afternoon's times were much quicker. Ricardo was up to third quickest after using his first set of new tyres and went quickest briefly whilst using his second set but dropped to ninth by the end of the afternoon. Antonio was not entirely happy with the balance of his car and ! opted to use only one set of new tyres. He finished the afternoon eleventh quickest.
Antonio Pizzonia 1:38.735
"I didn't have a good day really, I still have the same feeling as I did at the last test and we have a lot of work to do. We didn't seem to improve the car and we only used one set of tyres because I thought there was no reason to use the second set because the car was so unbalanced. Unfortunately after tomorrow we only have one more test before the races start."
Ricardo Sperafico 1:38.469
"It was the first day in my new car and I used the day to gain confidence with it and learn more about the car. It has not been a bad day but we still need to improve slightly. On the first set of tyres I set a good time and then we did some further tests. When we decided to use the second set of tyres, the reaction was a little bit different at the rear and I lost two tenths of a second. I am happy that we know how the car is working and that we are getting a good set-up for the race here. I hope I can improve my times tomorrow."
Team Manager - Paul Jackson
"We had a fairly productive test today, having got to a point where the cars have run without reliability problems. We've spent the day going through a programme of different set-ups and although the drivers are not at the top of the timesheets, we felt that we have the potential to be there when we have reached a more optimum set-up. It's still early days with the new cars but we are optimistic that we will be on the pace for the first race."
