Derek Hill finishes a solid 7th place in 2002 F3000 debut.

Nurburgring, Germany. After a last minute deal, Derek Hill went on to take the place of German driver, Alex Muller, at team Durango for this weekend's Grand Prix-supporting Formula 3000 race. Hill's first time in the new Lola chassis was just over a week ago at Monza in a two-day official test. After setting competitive times, a deal was done to do the Nurburgring race, with the intention to finish the season.

In qualifying, the American driver set the 9th quickest time, out-pacing his team mate, Rodrigo Sperifico, this year's winner in Brazil. In the race, Hill got away cleanly off the line, holding onto his position and slowly closing the gap to Swedish driver, Bjorn Wirdheim. An exciting race ensued as the pair battled for 6th place. Ultimately, Derek had to settle for 7th place after putting up with a soft brake pedal.

Hill had this to say: "This weekend has been so much better than I could've expected, not having raced in F3000 since the end of last year, although it would've been nice to score a point in my first race out in the new car. Having qualified in the top-ten and than fighting for a point's position in the race has been very satisfying. The team did a great job. I feel we can do even better at Silverstone in two weeks time."
