FIA International Formula 3000
Round 2 - Imola, Italy
13th April 2002
Antonio made a great getaway for the start of the second race and moved up to third position by the end of lap one, but as the race went on, Antonio struggled for the same pace as the leaders and on the seventh lap Pantano passed him. Antonio regained his position a couple of laps later only to be passed again with three laps remaining. Although Antonio is a little disappointed with the result he has taken another three points for his campaign and now lies fourth in the driver's championship. Ricardo Sperafico who was starting near the back of the grid in sixteenth place unfortunately had his front wing clipped and had to pit at the end of the second lap. When he rejoined the field he was at the back of the grid but managed to move up to fourteenth by the end of the race. Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais won the race from pole position followed by championship leader Rodrigo Sperafico and Giorgio Pantano in third.
Antonio Pizzonia P4
"I am quite disappointed again. It is the same thing I have been saying since the first test. The balance was really bad but it was still good to score some points, fourth with a really bad car is not too bad. When we have a competitive car we will be at the front for sure."
Ricardo Sperafico P14
"Again out of the points. Starting at the back is crazy as everyone is trying to fight their way to the front, and after the incident at the start, the car was not really very good and there were some problems with the front. It improved a little bit at the end of the race but it did not have the same pace as at the start. We haven't had a improvement from Brazil but let's see if we can make the points in the next race."
Team Manager - Paul Jackson
"Antonio had a tough race. In the early laps he battled with Rodrigo Sperafico to almost take second place and he was running very competitively for the first ten or twelve laps, then he was caught by Giorgio Pantano and he had to defend his position, at which time his tyres started to go off and he struggled to keep pace with the leaders. Nevertheless another fourth place and some points is some consolation.
Ricardo starting from sixteenth was always going to be tough and the inevitable contact with another car broke his front wing so he had to pit for a new nose which of course dropped him to the back of the field. By the end of the race he was turning out some respectable lap times but of course with no hope for any real result."
