Round 2 Qualifying at Imola, Italy
12th April 2002

The second qualifying session of the year took place in wet conditions in Imola. Although it was not raining for the start of the first session, the track was still very wet from earlier rain, however it was in this session that the quickest times of the afternoon were set because it began to rain just after the second session began. Antonio Pizzonia set the fourth fastest time of the day despite not having the best set-up for his car when the track was at it's quickest. By the end of the second session when the car was set up more to Antonio's liking the track was too wet and the times were much slower. Unfortunately Ricardo did not have a good day and did not find a good set-up during qualifying and finished the first session in fourteenth position and by the end of the second session he had dropped to sixteenth, but the team are hoping that he can improve in the race tomorrow.

Antonio Pizzonia 1:54.886 (P4)

"To finish fourth is not too bad, I could have been on pole easily today but at the beginning of the session when the track was at its best, the car was really bad and we had a big problem with the rear and a lack of grip. We made quite a lot of improvements for the second session but the track was not as quick. During the second session we still made a few more changes which improved the car quite a lot and by the end of the session the car was very good, but the track was five or six seconds slower. Out of the five laps I did at the end of the second session I was quickest at that time. It was just unfortunate that we lost the best part of the track when the car was unbalanced. I am a bit disappointed as we could have been on pole, but to finish P4 when the car was still bad is quite good. The race is a different story so let's see what happens tomorrow."

Ricardo Sperafico 1:57.436 (P16)

"I am a little bit disappointed, I expected to do a good qualifying time here and I arrived very confident. Unfortunately we didn't find a fast lap and the car was not helping me a lot. The team did some changes to the car but we were not able to get a good set-up in the wet and we really didn't find anything to go quicker. We have been talking a lot about the car since qualifying finished and we have some changes to make now whether it is wet or dry tomorrow."

Team Manager - Paul Jackson

"Further to our recent testing we came here today with the car set up differently than it was at the test here and the fact that it was wet didn't help us because we were working with a new set-up that we had only run in the dry, so it took a little while before Antonio had balanced his car to his liking. By which time the track was wetter and he couldn't improve his grid position, but fourth place is not too bad and now he's happy with the car we hope to improve on that in the race.

Ricardo unfortunately missed our test due to Williams testing commitments, so he started qualifying with a car that was unfamiliar to him and we didn't make the same progress on the set-up, so we are starting in a very disappointing 16th and can only hope that we progress from there tomorrow."
