Derek Hill completed the third round of the Italian F3000 Championship in 8th Position, which was achieved with a strong drive from 12th Position on the grid.
Saturday 13/05/00, Track Conditions : Dry / Sunny
Derek completed his first laps of the Imola Circuit, the home of the San Marino Grand Prix, during Saturday Mornings 45 minute free practice, concentrating on learning the circuit. In the afternoon qualifying session Derek secured 12th. Position with a time of 1,42.00. " I am pleased with 12th, as I have never been here before and only lapped the circuit for the first time this morning, there is definitely more to come but it is a good beginning to the weekend," Derek commented.
Sunday 14/05/00, Track Conditions : Dry / Sunny
During the morning warm up Derek and Team Da Vinci continued to work on the set up in the limited time available in the competitive Italian F3000 Championship.
Derek made an excellent start and entered the first corner in 9th position which he held for the first handful of laps, catching the 8th place car driven by Battistuzzi, challenging him on several occasions into the Tamburello Chicane. During this dice, Rossi closed on Derek and managed to pass him into Tosa once Derek lost momentum having challenged Battistuzzi at Villeneuve.
Derek later Challenged Rossi at Variante Alta, but was unable to pass the ex-World Go Kart Champion in the last few laps.
" I had a great start and enjoyed a good race with both Battistuzzi and Rossi. I could challenge throughout the whole race and if I had managed to get pass Battistuzzi I totally would have been sixth. But we have finished in the top ten and considering the lack of pre season testing I had and that I have never been here before I am pleased with the result," Derek commented from Imola Sunday evening.
