TULSA, OK --- Familiar names found their ways to Victory Lane in the first two races of the inaugural United States Formula Three Championship Powered by Volkswagen. Adam Andretti and Stuart Crow each won a round at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit near Tulsa to kick-off the new season.
Stuart Crow dominated Friday's unofficial practice session in his new Ralt F3/2000 prepared by Dave McMillan's DM Racing. Crow's Ralt, with a double-front shock system, seemingly adapted to the bumpy Hallett circuit more than the mono-shock system of the Dallara race cars. Crow, a former race school instructor at Hallett, also knew his way around the quick circuit and was a com-fortable two plus seconds faster than the entire field.
Qualifications - Round One
Crow easily captured the pole position by nearly 1.3 seconds over Adam Andretti in the Duesenberg Brothers Racing/Western Union Dallara F300. George Frazier was third in the Arcadia Motorsports Dallara F300.
Race - Round One
Andretti and Frazier both beat Crow off the start into turn one; however Crow was able to pass both before the end of the first lap. Crow maintained a 4 second lead until lap 12 when a minor electrical problem sidelined his Ralt. Andretti, brother of NASCAR star John and nephew of Mario, inherited the lead and won the first-ever United States Formula Three Championship Powered by Volkswagen race. Skip Weld, driving the Weldsports Dallara F300, was second and Frazier finished third. The Andretti win also allowed the Duesenberg name to return to Victory Lane. Car owner Keith Duesenberg is a grandson of the eldest Duesenberg brother who pioneered the Duesenberg name into car making and motorsports.
Qualifications - Round Two
Andretti clipped Crow in qualifying for pole position in the second race by less than .140 seconds. Frazier posted third quickest time.
Race - Round Two
Andretti and Frazier both made good starts to be 1-2 into turn one. Crow passed Frazier on the back straight and chased Andretti. Andretti was able to hold off Crow until lap 4 when the Ralt out-braked the Dallara into the first turn. Andretti tried desperately to stay with Crow for several laps before spinning off twice. He recovered to finish second about 22 seconds behind the winner. Paul Jenkins, a Gulf War Navy F-14 pilot, was third. Jenkins ran the Pilette Speed Tradition Dallara F399.
