INCREDIBLE START TO JARAMA WEEKEND FOR PACE-SETTER BRATT
FIAT Spanish Formula 3 Championship debutant Will Bratt made a huge impact during official pre-event testing at Jarama today, Friday, 2nd May, by setting the fastest time of all ahead of this weekend's first two races of the 2008 season.
Under gloriously sunny skies and with temperatures around the 25 degree mark, Will lapped the Madrid circuit in 1m 29.206 seconds during the first of today's two 50-minute sessions to end the test over a 10th of a second quicker than Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari.
Clearly an outstanding performance by any standards, the 20-year-old Banbury racer's preparations ahead of his first ever F3 race tomorrow have been all the more impressive considering today's test outing was only his second run at the wheel of his brand new F308 Dallara chassis -- the first coming yesterday, Thursday, 1st May.
Speaking at the conclusion of today's test, Will said: "It's obviously fantastic to be quickest, we're delighted with the pace we've shown and particularly because everyone was on a level playing field with regard to using new tyres. Potentially, we have the pace to do a good job in qualifying tomorrow and that's certainly the aim.
"We're still learning all of the time, I didn't have my first run in the new car until yesterday but I'm feeling very comfortable and confident we can start the season strongly. Tomorrow is where it will really count but I'm confident we'll be able to qualify well and put ourselves in a good position for the weekend's races."
While emerging as the fastest driver on track today, one of the key highlights was Will's ability to lap quicker than Jaime Alguersuari who, alongside his Spanish F3 challenge, has already won a race in the British F3 Championship this year.
Furthermore, Will was the quickest of the British drivers by a substantial margin with former Formula BMW UK and Formula Palmer Audi racer Jonathan Legris the next best down in 15th position, two places ahead of fellow Brit Alex Waters.
Driving for the Tecnocasa backed EmiliodeVillota.com Motorsport team this year, Will is also supported by Apotex UK for his debut season of F3 competition. The British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) Rising Star is also in his final year of study at Oxford University.
Qualifying ahead of rounds one and two of the 2008 FIAT Spanish F3 Championship at Jarama will take place at 11.15 (local time) tomorrow, Saturday, 3rd May, with the first of the weekend's races following at 16.00. Race two is scheduled to start at 12.30 on Sunday, 4th May.
