FORMULA 3 DRIVER IN A VIOLENT SPEEDING ACCIDENT

Red Bull Jr Team F3-driver Mika Maeki came to within a few millimetres of losing his life in a high-speed car accident in Tampere, Finland late Saturday night. Maeki crashed his Nissan sportscar into a concrete wall after emerging from a downtown Tampere "Asematunneli" tunnel following a high-speed street race with another car. Maeki's car was pierced by several railing posts of the tunnel, one of which ended within millimetres of the driver's stomach as the car came to a halt outside of the tunnel entrance. Maeki and at least one passenger were hospitalised, while a number of passers-by received light injuries from flying debris.

According to Tampere Police spokesman, the car was travelling at a speed "significantly higher" than the 40km/h speed limit in the area. The incident is being investigated as gross negligence and serious endangering of road safety, which means Maeki stands to lose his driving licence for a minimum of 6 months, and may face a sentence of up to 2 years in prison.
