The fifth meeting of the Spanish Formula 3 Championship taking place this weekend in Valencia did not bring the expected results for RACING ENGINEERING. Coming to the circuit of Valencia with two rookies, RACING ENGINEERING on one hand decided to give them a chance to get used to this very special and demanding race track and on the other hand tried some very risky set ups on the cars. Sadly this"double or nothing" strategy did not turn out to be the right one for this race under very hot conditions on a very dirty track. Andy Soucek, the 17 year-old Austrian finished fifth. Lucas Lasserre finished the race in seventh position, Alvaro Parente in tenth place.
All three RACING ENGINEERING drivers came to Valencia first of all to get to know the very technical circuit of Cheste. Alvaro Parente was the only one of the three having driven a race here before. The days before the race were characterized by a lot of intense work for the drivers and engineers. A lot of different things have been tried out during this weekend. The positions achieved in the first qualifying session were not at all satisfying. Improvements could be seen in the second session, where Racing Engineering's drivers could keep their times from the morning session although it was a lot warmer and the track much dirtier. Nevertheless Lucas Lasserre, Andy Soucek and Alvaro Parente started the race from position six, seven and eight. Andy Soucek has been the one making the best out of his position. At the start he already overtook his teammate Lucas Lasserre and shortly after Barral. Andy drove a constant race in fifth position, only being passed by Barral in lap 14 as he made a mistake and almost went off the track. Immediately in the lap after he came into fifth position again. Lucas Lasserre finished the race in seventh position, Alvaro Parente in tenth.
After the race Andy Soucek stated,"I had a very good start and stayed on the outside. After overtaking Lucas I also tried to overtake Costa, but he has been braking very late. Then I tried to overtake Barral in a very dangerous situation, and I did. During the rest of the race I made quite a few mistakes and that's also why Barral could pass me. But then he made a mistake right after and I could gain fifth position again." Lucas Lasserre, after an unsuccessful weekend keeping the overall championship in mind announced,"It was a hard race and it was very difficult. But I am a fighter and nothing is decided yet in the championship. We have to analyze this race now and then prepare everything for the next race in Jerez:" After the race Alvaro Parente mentioned,"From the first lap I already knew that it would be difficult to overtake and recover positions. The car was difficult to drive. I gave my best but it wasn't enough and the car made too many problems. The set up we had was good for cool and clean conditions on the track."
