Difficult weekend for Laurens Vanthoor in F3 Masters Zandvoort
ZANDVOORT. "I've had a pretty difficult weekend", a sincere Laurens Vanthoor told us after the Masters F3 in Zandvoort. "I had expected far more from this weekend, but it wasn't to be. But I have gained a fair amount of experience and racing in a new car, on new tyres on an unknown circuit is not self evident, notwithstanding all the hard work put in by Carlin Motorsport here in Zandvoort." Next week Laurens Vanthoor is competing in the fourth meeting of the ATS F3 Cup , where he will be defending his leader's position in the championship.
The Masters F3 in Zandvoort is run with Kumho tyres "and that was a first discovery for me" Laurens Vanthoor continued. "I therefore didn't know the tyres or the car - not identical to the German F3 - neither did I have any experience of this circuit in the dunes, where the wind and the sand play an important role. These are all elements which require driving time, but with only one half hour available during free practice I just didn't have the time." As such the qualifying sessions were a difficult assignment and Laurens Vanthoor just managed a top-10 in his group, just enough for the following round. "But on top of that I had some bad luck. It was suddenly decided to only let the first nine go on through, and so I fell out. I was really disappointed. We didn't have any more driving time and setting out from 22nd place on the grid is difficult racing..."
Notwithstanding that Vanthoor drove an excellent race climbing up from 22nd to 15th place, and a third place with the VW drivers. "I was experiencing a fair amount of understeer and overtaking in those conditions becomes an art. But on the other hand I have gained a fair amount of experience and know that to achieve the top a fair amount of preparation is required. Carlin Motorsport did everything in their power to work things out, and so the only thing left is to look ahead and concentrate on the coming weekend and pull out all the stops in Oschersleben."
The following meeting of the ATS F3 Cup will take place on 20th and 21st June, during the visit of the FIA GT in Oschersleben.
