ZOLDER. The 19th edition of the Masters of F3 will be held at Zandvoort, in Holland, on the 13th and 14th of June. One of the contenders, in what could be called the world championship of F3, is Belgian youngster Laurens Vanthoor. The official VW Motorsport driver will race for the British Carlin Motorsport team. "I'm glad to get this opportunity", explains Laurens Vanthoor, "even if it's rather unexpected and unplanned. But anyway I'm very motivated and focused and with my result of Macau in mind, I'll do more than just be there to learn. Performing is the key word."
The 19th edition sees the Masters of F3 returning to Circuitpark Zandvoort where it all started in 1991. Since than, many great promising drivers won the title, with David Coulthard, Jos Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton as most illustrious names. Drivers coming home second and third listen to names such as Ralf Schumacher, Nick Heidfeld, Mark Webber and Adrian Sutil, while Rubens Barrichello, Nelson Piquet Jr and former GP2 championship leader Romain Grosjean were among those taking pole position in the Dutch Dunes.
Laurens Vanthoor: "It's a legendary event, with a list of great autosport names. So, I'm of course very happy to compete in Zandvoort with Carlin Motorsport, a Volkswagen team as well. It was a last minute decision, but without doubt one I did not want to miss out. I hadn't planned the Masters for this year, but Carlin Motorsport is a fantastic team with a great state of honour."
Laurens Vanthoor, actual leader in the German F3 Championship, will race a Dallara Volkswagen F308 on Kumho tyres, a substantial difference with the German car. "Indeed", Laurens agrees, "we race on Yokohama in Germany and our car has not the same updates as in the Euroseries F3. In order to avoid any advantage for the Euroseries teams, Kumho will develop a special tire for Zandvoort so that all teams will have equal chances. But anyway, I'll have to discover the car and the track, as I do not really know Zandvoort. That's of course a disadvantage, but I prefer to call it a challenge. I will be satisfied with a top- 10 in this extremely competitive competition, but my real aim is to perform as well - or better - as I did in Macau, where I finished sixth."
