Laurens Vanthoor ends the season with a brilliant second place Macao
Laurens Vanthoor ended his F3 season in a brilliant way. The young Belgian, member of the RACB National Team, finished off the international F3 season with a strong second place in the 57th Grand Prix F3 of Macao, the best ever performance of a Belgian driver in this renowned race. The Macao F3 is a fixed appointment for the best F3 drivers in the world and these top drivers in the former Portuguese colony as a rule make a major step to furthering their career.
Vanthoor drove an extremely strong weekend, which on Thursday and Friday started out with the free practice sessions and the qualifiers.
Laurens Vanthoor: "I was pretty quickly in the right rhythm and drove up front during the free practice sessions without any problems. Everything also went smoothly during qualifying, the set-up paid off and I was able to take the qualifying race on Saturday in third spot. Once again the Signature VW-team was very strong and the atmosphere could not haven been better. I must admit that the Macao circuit, with its long straights followed by a Monaco style street portion is definitely to my liking. I really love this place and the circuit."
The qualifying race ran as according to the earlier lap times and on Saturday Laurens Vanthoor found himself on the podium having finished in second place, not only an excellent performance but also a perfect starting point for the actual Grand Prix.
Laurens Vanthoor: "To be on the front line of the grid during the start procedure of the GP of Macao F3 was highly enjoyable, knowing that all the other top players are behind you and that gives you quite a kick, just before the lights turn to green. Unfortunately my start wasn't ideal, but I fought back up from fourth spot into third and then into second place, after which I set about attacking Mortara, even managing to clinch first place. After that I built up enough distance to ensure that my Italian team mate could no longer take advantage of slipstreaming on the straights and catching me. I truly had the feeling that I was well on the way to victory."
Unfortunately a safety-car procedure brought the pack back together and Mortara was able to take advantage of the slipstreaming of the car ahead of him and move on through into first place. And as was the case on Saturday Laurens Vanthoor finished in second place.
Laurens Vanthoor: "I'm obviously delighted with my result, the entire weekend was strong. I managed to twice grab second place, without making use of race facts, which pleases me no end. This is also proof that at an international level I have my place up front and this motivates me even more for the coming season. On the other hand I can't hide the fact that I would have loved winning, it appeared as though I was well on the way to victory, but the safety-car had other ideas, which perfectly fits in the line of the race here. You know that it can happen, but I could have done without it, that's for sure."
In 2011 Laurens Vanthoor will once again be competing in the F3 EuroSeries with Signature VW and the RACB National team, having finished this season as rookie in sixth place.
