Carlo van Dam dominates at Okayama

Okayama - Carlo van Dam has today won the tenth round of the Japanese Formula 3 championship at Okayama. With his third win (and tenth podium finish) of the year, the Dutch driver of Toyota Team TOM's further increased his championship lead, also by scoring extra points for claiming pole position and recording the fastest lap in the race. After ten of the eighteen rounds, Carlo now leads the 2008 Japanese F3 championship by 47 points over team mate Taguto Iguchi and 58 points over Nissan driver Hironobu Yasuda.

"I had no problems", Carlo sums up today's race. "After the start I was able to pull away three tenths of a second each lap and in the second half of the race I was able to consolidate my lead. During the testing sessions here on Friday, things were not perfect yet, but throughout the weekend we managed to improve the car, with pole position, a start-to-finish victory and fastest lap as a result. I think we can be satisfied with the first half of the season. I moved to Japan to race in a different championship, for a different team and on tracks that are all new to me, so it is a nice challenge. We worked very hard on some setup issues, made a lot of progress and have been of the podium after each race so far. If you who want to get an idea of the calibre of Japanese Formula 3, you only have to look at the Macau Grand Prix, where drivers from the Japanese series made up the top five last year. Oliver Jarvis won that race and was third overall here last year. Now we have a month without races or tests and it is nice of course to go into that break after a strong race like today's and having a substantial lead in the championship."

Carlo returns to Holland for a few weeks tomorrow. Round eleven and twelve of the season will be staged on July 12 and 13 at Suzuka.
