Pole position for round 4 Carlo van Dam third at Autopolis
GOTEMBA - Dutch racing driver Carlo van Dam today finished third in round 3 of the 2008 Japanse Formula 3 Championship at the Autopolis circuit. Carlo had to fight his way back up from sixth place, having lost a few positions at the start of the race. Tomorrow the Toyota Team TOM's driver will start round 4 from pole position.
"It is a beautiful track", says Carlo about Autopolis. "It is located at 800 metres above sea level and the circuit has many corners. We have done a lot of testing here on the days before the event and that went well. Because you have 18 corners here, your tires are finished after 2 laps. We had spots of rain during qualifying and I was second on the grid of the first race and for Sunday I took pole position. As it rained quite hard before the race, the side of the track where I had to start from was very slippery. There was no
Carlo van Dam at Autopolis, where he finished third today and will start from pole position tomorrow.
"[At the start there was no] grip and everyone on my side got away badly. I got to the first corner in sixth position and quickly made my way up to third, but then there was too little time left to get close enough to the first two. The start was a pity of course, but things went well in the race and at least I was on the podium again. Tomorrow I will start from pole position, so that's good. I am happy with the car, since our test at Motegi I think we have things sorted out nicely. We now use a new suspension and that is an improvement. The steering is a lot heavier, though, especially with these 18 corners here. My team mate Kunimoto even had the old suspension put back on, as he could no longer turn the wheel after 5 laps. That's why I now call him Popeye..."
