Caldarelli wins and hits championship lead at Misano
Andrea Caldarelli experienced a rocketing start in the 2010 Italian Formula 3 Championship. At Misano, he cruised to dominate Race 1 and then settled for fourth on Race 2, as he took the lead in standings. The driver from Pescara, driving a Prema Powerteam Dallara, confirmed on-track the positive impression left in winter testing, as he avoided wheelspin at the start to take the Race 1 lead at the first corner. In the following laps, he constantly increased his gap over second-placed Zanella, and kept an almost unreachable pace for anyone else. On the final stages, a full-course yellow came out due to a spin, but as stewards subsequently decided to red-flag the session, Caldarelli managed to keep an unchallenged lead. On Race 2, Andrea started on Row 4 (due to the reversed top-8 grid from qualifying). On a now dry racetrack, Andrea avoided to commit mistakes and battled his way up to 4th, keeping a comfortable lead in standings. He now stands with 28 points, followed by Zanella, Dillmann (22), and by Richelmi, Ramos (21).
"It's been an extremely tough weekend, because the overall competitive level is really high, and you pay an high price for any mistake. The championship started in the best pos- sible way for us, as the Prema Dallara had a perfect set-up on Race 1, and I had the chan- ce to push without taking many risks. I got a little concerned by the safety-car, because my previous-lap advantage was gone, but the race was almost over and race control deci- ded to call the final laps off. I hoped for a win, I thought it would have been extremely hard but I made it. On Race 2, with a dry track, I started from Row 4, and I tried not to make any damage, since the fight was quite hard. I passed the cars I had in front and I clinched up to 4th. At that point, the top-3 cars were far away and I settled for some valuable points. I'm extremely satisfied with this weekend's results. I want to thank the guys, the sponsors and everyone that supported me during this long winter."
