SIXTH AND FIFTH PLACE FOR HO-PIN TUNG
HOCKENHEIM, 30 APRIL 2006 -- Ho-Pin Tung finished the first race of the weekend for the German Formula 3 Cup in Hockenheim in sixth place. On sunday he drove an aggressive race to finish the second race in a sunny Hockenheim in fifth position. The JB Motorsport driver could now add important points to to his championship tally in which he is fourth at the moment. Ho-Pin Tung: "A little mistake from myself and wrong gear ratio's for the gearbox costed me the podium on Saturday. On Sunday it was much better and I could race more aggressive".
After the successfull raceweekend in Oschersleben Ho-Pin Tung, who is leading the German Formula 3 Cup, started qualifying for the first race of the weekend at the Hockenheim race track. The title contender competing for the Belgian JB Motorsport team qualified very well in his Lola and ended the session in 5th place.
The second qualifying session for all 29 competitors started in the afternoon, deciding the grid positions for the start of the second race, Ho-Pin finished again in 5th place.
HO-PIN: "In the first qualifying session I had a problem with a slower car in front of me. From the data of the car we could see that if I wasn't held up, I could have gone much faster. For the 2nd qualifying session we changed the setup of the car a little bit to gain more topspeed. Again I was very quick and drove some very good section times but unfortunately I could not get the maximum and drive one quick lap. If I was only one-tenth faster I would have been much higher on the grid!"
Ho-Pin Tung (23) started the first race of the weekend in 5th position. The JB Motorsport driver had a very good start and was able to finish the first lap in 3rd position. Unfortunately Ho-Pin made a mistake at the hairpin and he slipped back to 5th place. During the late stages of the race German driver Nico Hulkenberg passed Ho-Pin while exiting the hairpin as a result the Chinese driver with startnumber six became sixth in the race and added another three points to his championship total.
During the race, Ho-Pin's fastest lap was even faster as Joey Foster's lap who eventually won the race.
HO-PIN: "I made a good start and immediately passed a few other drivers. After that I could maintain my position until I made a mistake at the hairpin which caused me to loose two places. Actually I had the wrong gear ratio's and my second gear was too long which costed a lot of time coming out of the exit of the hairpin and allowed them to overtake me. Finally also Nico Hulkenberg passed me at the exit of the hairpin."
Ho-Pin started the second race in 5th place but ran wide after the start and lost a place to Recardo Bruins. In the second lap the JB Motorsport driver misjudged the braking of Recardo Bruins and had to undertake avoiding action which opened a little gap to Recardo Bruins. Within a few laps, Ho-Pin was able to close the gap and ran behind Bruins for a few laps. Despite Bruins tried to defend his position Ho-Pin was able to do a succesfull move and overtook Bruins before himself being overtaken out of the slipstream by Joey Foster which ended the weekend for Ho-Pin tung in 5th place.
HO-PIN: "Before the race we changed the gear ratio's for the gearbox which was an improvement and allowed me to drive more aggressive. After the start I ran wide on the dirt part of the track and lost a position to Recardo Bruins. I was faster but he was defending his lines and I missed the extra speed to overtake him. Finally I could overtake him but shortly after Joey Foester overtook me and I finished the race in 5th place".
