Devaney returns to F3 with Victory
After Missing Round One of the German F3 series in Oschersleben due to a lack of budget, Irishman Michael Devaney made a stunning return in Round Two at Hockenheim on the weekend(22 May). The 20 year old signed for the reigning champions HS Technik and it was only in free practice that he got to sample the car for the first time.
In the dying minutes of Qualifying for race one, the 20 year old jumped to the top of the timesheets in his Dallara-Opel Speiss to secure pole on his comeback to the Championship. In the race he led into the first corner and never looked back as he pulled away from the strong 28 car grid to take victory by 4.419 seconds from Germany's Robert Kath(Dallara-Mercedes) and Pascal Kochem(Dallara-Mercedes).
It was a different story in race two as Michael looked set for another Points haul after qualifying fourth but as soon as the lights went out at the start of the race his clutch exploded leaving the Dubliner stranded on the start line and sent him into immediate retirement. The race was won by his German team-mate Martin Hippe with Germany's Peter Elkmann and Holland's Ferdinand Kool 2nd and 3rd.
With his win and Pole Position from race one he has still gained in the Championship reducing the gap from 18 to16 points to the leaders but he knows it should have been a lot more if he didn't retire from race two. "This was a fantastic comeback for me, after missing the first round in Oschersleben the pressure was on to gain points in the championship today and we did but it should have been a lot more. Race One was a perfect lights to flag victory but we didn't have the luck in the second race. I'm now looking forward to the next round in Sachsenring as I've now gained experience with my new team and car."
Next Round at Sachsenring will take place on the 19th of June . For all the latest news and results visit www.michaeldevaney.com.
