2012 ATS Formula 3 Cup champion Jimmy Eriksson is set for his second appearance in the prestigious Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix in China.

Eriksson has signed a deal to race for British outfit Galaxy Double R Racing in this year’s edition of the Asian street event outside Hong Kong, as he returns to the blue riband race one year on from his 2011 debut.

Eriksson’s team-mate over the weekend will be World Series by Renault driver Kevin Korjus (Estonia). Galaxy Double R Racing was founded, among others, by former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Räikkönen, and has previously fielded names like Valtteri Bottas (Williams F1 third driver) and GP3 champion Mitch Evans at Macau.

Eriksson’s regular ATS Formula 3 Cup team, Lotus, will not attend the 2012 Macau Grand Prix. “I’m excited to be able to return to Macau for a second time this year – it’s a truly unique happening, and the perfect way to end the season,” says Jimmy Eriksson.

“The dialogue with Galaxy Double R Racing has been positive throughout, and it didn’t take long to commit to this collaboration.

I have already visited the team in the UK in order to try out the new car that everyone has to drive in Macau, and the first signs are very encouraging – even though I’m well aware of the amount of work we have ahead of us.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to conduct as much driving as I would have wanted to in Macau last year, but I still got an understanding of just how massively challenging the circuit is; and after a season like the one I’ve just had, I feel much better prepared than I did twelve months ago. I am ready.”

The Macau Grand Prix is the only event on the calendar which pitches all the fastest single-seater youngsters on the globe against each other, and is commonly referred to as the Formula 3 world finals.

The 2012 grid features the full set of international F3 champions, with Jimmy Eriksson being one of them on the back of his triumph in the German series.

The first Macau F3 Grand Prix took place in 1983 and was won by Ayrton Senna. The 2012 edition – the 30 running of the event – is pencilled in for November 15-18.
