DOMINICK MUERMANS UPBEAT AFTER FINISHING BP ULTIMATE MASTERS OF FORMULA 3!
ZANDVOORT, AUGUST 06 2006 -- In his maiden BP Ultimate Masters of Formula 3 race of his career, Dominick Muermans attained his initial aims at the first attempt. With the knowledge that he could not yet match the level of experience and competitiveness of his opponents, the Van Amersfoort Racing F3 rookie still maximised his performance in both qualifying and race. Starting from the 18th row, Muermans finished the 25 lap race at Circuit Park Zandvoort in 32nd position.
FREE PRACTISES + QUALIFYING
After Muermans used the two Free Practise sessions on Saturday morning to get acquainted with the 4300 meter long circuit in the Dutch dunes, he started the two qualifying sessions with confidence. Not without reason, as the young Dutchman improved his laptime in every stint he did. After setting a best laptime of 1:36.772 in the first session, Muermans improved his performance with almost two tenths of a second (1:36.595) in the final qualifying session. With this laptime, he qualified himself in 37th position for the most exciting race of the year.
Before starting the race, Muermans set himself two clear goals: try to fight the drivers ahead and make sure to finish the race. After finishing the race in 32nd position, the German Recaro F3 Cup racer attained his ends easily. Muermans matched the speed of many other drivers and was able to work his way up by overtaking four opponents in the opening stage of the 25 lap race. After understeering disabled him to continue his advance halfway the race, Muermans consolidated his position but still set a series of consistent and competitive laptimes.
DOMINICK MUERMANS: "I was already on cloud nine yesterday by qualifying myself for the race, but finishing it after a competitive drive feels even better! If I would not have encountered the understeer problems during the race, I'm sure I could even have gained more positions. I kne w that the guys around me were much more experienced than I was, so I can only be 100% satisfied about the results. Next stop is Assen, so I'm again looking forward to another home race next week!"
