More and more, this year's ATS Formula 3 Cup season turns into a battle of ambitious rookies and established drivers. In the first rounds of the season, the newcomers gave their more experienced opponents a really hard time. Drivers such as Tom Dillmann, Stef Dusseldorp or Markus Pommer who are contesting their second Cup season have to give their very best to have a chance of prevailing against the likes of Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Abt or Felix Rosenqvist who have entered the ATS Formula 3 Cup just at the beginning of 2010.
Currently, Tom Dillmann holds the championship lead with 32 points on his tally but Germany's Cup rookie Daniel Abt follows just three points behind and Magnussen (28 points) also isn't far away. So, Dillmann must avoid making the slightest mistake if he wants to defend his championship lead. Meanwhile, last year's runner-up, Stef Dusseldorp, has to cope with massive pressure as he is only fourth in the championship but has set himself the goal to win the title.
His Team Principal, Frits van Amersfoort, stresses: "Good newcomers often succeeded in convincing right from the start. Laurens Vanthoor, for instance, was very successful in 2008, his debut year - although he made some rookie mistakes. And in 2009, he had to work hard to prevail against his new team-mate Stef Dusseldorp. Therefore, I always say that a driver mustn't feel safe, in his second ATS Formula 3 Cup season."
There are several reasons for the competitiveness of the Cup rookies: certainly, the talent is a key factor but at the same time, they also benefit from a good education, with several years in karting representing the best basis. Furthermore, the teams attach major importance to the pre-season tests that help the young drivers to quickly familiarise themselves with the respective team and car.
Therefore, the ATS Formula 3 Cup enthusiasts may look forward to witnessing more close battles between the established drivers and the ATS Formula 3 Cup newcomers. After all, rookies such as Abt or Magnussen won't be ready to regard the 2010 season just as a learning year.
