Promising qualifying speed from Team BRM
After testing there last week, Team BRM are back at Oran Park Raceway this weekend for round 5 of the 2003 Australian Formula 3 Championship.
Friday was a busy day for Team BRM, with both Reindler and Fitzgerald going off during the two practice sessions. Reindler's car suffered damage to it's front right section, whilst the damage to Fitzgerald's car was less significant. The biggest job with Fitzgerald's car was the removal of all the sand from the car after his trip through the sand trap.
In his debut race meeting at the track, Team BRM's young speedster, Karl Reindler, UTS Geophysics Dallara F301 Spiess Opel, qualified in an impressive 4th position for tomorrow's first race. Reindler set a time of 1:04.4797 in the first qualifying session, just 0.7 secs behind pole sitter Barton Mawer, Dallara F396 Spiess Opel. During the second qualifying session, Reindler suffered with grit in his eye, causing a high degree of discomfort and making it difficult to fully focus on setting a quick time. Traffic was also a problem for Reindler, who struggled to get a clear lap during the session. As a result Reindler slipped down the grid for the start of the second race setting a time of 1:05.4985, which will see him start in 9th place for the second race.
Matt Fitzgerald, Inmotion Technologies Dallara F301 Spiess Opel, has struggled with handling problems throughout the weekend, which was compounded when he lost time in the second session after running into the sand trap. Fitzgerald was unable to attend the test session with Team BRM last week due to work commitments, and as a result has had to work much harder to find a car setup in which he is comfortable. Fitzgerald will start in 10th and 11th positions for the two races of this round, setting qualifying times of 1:06.3678 and 1:06.3020. Despite struggling to find a comfortable set up, Fitzgerald has improved his lap time by 3 seconds from practice on Friday to today's qualifying sessions and will be looking at moving up the order during the both races on Sunday. The team will work with Fitzgerald between now and the tomorrow's races to improve the set up of his car.
Craig Rundle, replacing Darren Palmer in this round for Team BRM in the U- Drive SA Dallara F301 Spiess Opel, has been the Team's big improver of the weekend. Rundle improved his lap time by 5 seconds from Friday's practice session to today's final qualifying session, qualifying in 6th position for the second race of this round of the Championship. In the first qualifying session, Rundle had throttle problems that restricted him to only 10 laps, he was however able to set a time of 1:07.0893 to qualify in 11th position for the first of tomorrow's two races.
Team BRM feel that they have made a significant improvement in this the 5th round of the 2003 Australian Formula 3 Championship, in particular after the test session they completed at Oran Park last week and are looking forward to the two races tomorrow.
