McFADYEN TO GET F3 CHANCE WITH TEAM BRM AT PHILLIP ISLAND
ADELAIDE - Friday, August 12th, 2005 -- Team BRM have confirmed today that reigning Gold Star Champion Neil McFadyen will join the team for round 6 of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 championship for the CAMS Gold Star at Phillip Island next weekend.
McFadyen - who will make his first ever Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship start at the Victorian circuit - will drive the Team BRM Dallara F304 Speiss entry that was driven by reigning Australian Formula 3 champion Karl Reindler at this year's May Phillip Island meeting, in a one off drive for the Adelaide based team.
The 21-year-old driver comes to team BRM as one of the most successful Australian Open wheel drivers of recent years, taking the Gold Star Championship for Ralt Australia in a dominating season last year. McFadyen also won the 2003 Australian Formula Ford championship and has impressed many in selected V8 Supercar events over the last two years, further emphasising his significant talent.
Neil also won this year's opening F4000 series' round at Phillip Island, giving him a strong mental boost heading into next weekend's F3 round at the 4.6km circuit south of Melbourne.
"I'm really excited to have been given this opportunity to race with team BRM at Phillip Island next weekend," McFadyen said this afternoon. "I've only ever done 20 laps in a Formula 3 car before so I'll be going in a bit green, but the aim will be to get out there and get as many laps as possible in the car over the weekend.
"I love racing at Phillip Island -- it's a fantastic circuit and I had a bit of success there earlier on this year, so I'm looking forward to mixing it up with the other drivers currently in Formula 3 racing." He said.
"The racing in F3 is very competitive at the moment and I can't wait to get out there."
Team BRM owner Bronte Rundle was delighted to have secured the services of the accomplished driver heading into a crucial stage in this year's championship for the team.
"We're very happy to be able to give Neil the opportunity to race in this year's Gold Star Championship with Team BRM," he said. "(Car owner) James Rosenberg from Gawler Farm Machinery has been following Neil's progress for some time and was keen to see him in a Formula 3 car this season, which is what we have been able to achieve heading into Phillip Island.
"There is no better time to have Neil in the second car, with our lead driver Michael Trimble fighting hard to win this year's championship," he continued. "When you look at both Michael and Karl (Reindler's) form at Phillip Island earlier this year, things are looking very promising for us heading into the weekend for both Neil, and Michael's championship challenge."
Round 6 of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship for the CAMS Gold Star & Australian Driver's Championship will be contested over two races at Phillip Island on August 20 -- 21.
