2001 New South Wales Formula 2 Championship
Season Finale, Oran Park November 10, 2001.
To the final round of the club Championship at Sydney's Oran Park and the NSWRRC "do it in the dark" day night meeting. A healthy 12 entries for the twilight meeting, and a packed four race eight lap schedule and qualifying to contend with. Held over 15 minutes Saturday morning, qualifying saw a few surprises, with tom Brickley grabbing second behind Ian Black. Kevin Lewis came next with Chris Ahyee. John Muddle was 5th followed by Tony Wood and Don Hewitt. Greg Muddle in the Van Dieman Fford put in a good effort for 8th ahead of the F2's of Terry Robertson, Rob Bishop and Ted Dunford. Rudolf Masi didn't make it out and withdrew from the meeting.
Race 1 saw Tom Brickley bog down of the line and retire. Kevin Lewis had the jump on Ian Black and held him off to the end. Ted Dunford stormed through from 11th on the grid to 3rd, ahead of the consistent Tony Wood. Next were the Muddles, John ahead of Greg. Chris Ahyee, Robertson and Bishop bought up the tail of the field. Don Hewitt joined Brickley as a retirement. Ian Black set the fastest lap of 0.43.16.
On to race 2 after lunch and Black gained command back off Lewis. Ted Dunford was 3rd again followed by Tony Wood and Ahyee. The Muddles reversed there placing's, Greg ahead of father his John. Don Hewitt, Rob Bishop and Terry Robertson bought up the rear. Tom Brickley didn't bother the lap scorers. Black again fastest posting a 0.43.9013.
Race 3was almost a carbon copy of race 2. Black ahead of Lewis and Dunford. Brickley charged through the field to finish 4th ahead of Wood, Greg Muddle, John Muddle, Don Hewitt and Rob Bishop. Terry Robertson had a scar on the grid with fuel spilling on to him as his team topped up before the start. Terry wisely sat out the race. Black posting the fastest time of 0.43.6922.
The trophy race was next. A start time of 4.55 PM. Late for an open wheeler race. Drivers having to deal with a setting sun. Ian Black was dominant again. Lewis behind him followed by Dunford.Tony Wood in 4th ahead of John Muddle and Tom Brickley.Rob Bishop and terry Robertson bought up the rear. Don Hewitt didn't finish with Greg Muddle not taking the start. Black stopped the watch quickest at 0.43.8675.
So the end to another season with John Muddle being crowned as the new Club Champion. The annual awards night is down for the 17th of November. So plenty for the teams to do over the summer break to be ready for Eastern Creek in March 2002. Have a safe Christmas and New Year and we'll see you in March.
