PRACTICE IN DOMINATION FOR TEAM BRM IN F3 FRIDAY PRACTICE
One of the most commonly heard things in the paddock on Friday is 'It's only practice -- the times don't really matter!'
Just don't tell that to Team BRM.
Whilst they acknowledge that the hard work is still to come, the multiple title-winning team went about some practice domination ahead of this weekends' sixth round of the 2008 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship for the Gold Star today at Eastern Creek.
The Adelaide-based outfit placed cars first, second and third in both sessions today in a stunning show of pace.
Nathan Caratti (#5 Parklands on Bertram Dallara F307 Mercedes Benz) was fastest in both sessions today, his best lap of 1m25.3496s came in practice one, where he was .39s quicker than team-mate James Winslow (#4 Drivingsolutions.com.au Dallara F307 --Mercedes Benz) and F3 returnee Chris Alajajian, who was third.
The results were the same in the second session, though Caratti was a convincing .75 quicker than Alajajian and Winslow.
Sydneysider Alajajian returns to Eastern Creek today after a six-month hiatus out of the driving seat, the F3 lap record holder enjoying his time back behind the wheel of a wings and slicks car.
Stuart Kostera (Scud Racing), Leanne Tander (TanderSport) and Mat Sofi (Transwest Racing) were all amidst the competitive top six in practice today with each hoping to play a factor in the outright results this weekend.
In the Formula 3 National Class Tim Macrow (R-Tek Motorsport Dallara F304 -- Spiess) was quickest overall, his 1m26.96s coming in second practice where he was less than 1.5 seconds behind the faster, new-generation, championship class cars.
Chris Gilmour (All Properties Group) was fastest in the F3 'race-within-a-race' in practice one.
Andrew Mill looks set to close out the Trophy Class championship battle with a strong weekend at Eastern Creek, and appropriately topped both practice sessions in his class, today.
F3 newcomer Steve Morcombe made his on-track debut today in his ex-Fortec / Mansell Dallara F307 and ran reliably in both sessions.
Tomorrow counts more towards the weekends' action with two qualifying sessions to be contested to set the grid for the two, 13-lap races to be held Sunday.
