2002 New South Wales Formula 2 Championship.
Round 1 - Eastern Creek March 9-10.
Gloomy skies greeted competitors for the first round of the State Formula 2 Championship. A healthy 18 entries over the F2, F3 and Sports 1300 race, 12 of which were Formula cars. The ARDC had a few pit and paddock problems. Space was at a premium. All competitors were not happy with the lack of room. But soldier on they did.
Qualifying on Saturday morning was a 15-minute affair. Three minutes into it the red flag was raised for a competitor stuck in the middle of turn two. This was quickly cleaned up and the session went on. Kevin Lewis ended up quickest with a 1m37.73, ahead of Californian Jeff Brewer on his first visit to the circuit. Craig Dawson was next ahead of John Muddle with a few engine dramas. Next was Brian Burman in his Ralt Rt30, ahead of Rookie Brendon Cook. Ian Black and Ted Dunford had mechanical problems as di Tom Brickley and Terry Robertson. Don Hewitt and Craig Smith withdrew from the meeting.
Race 1 over 5 laps saw Kevin Lewis lead home Jeff Brewer. Craig Dawson was third ahead of Brian Burman. Brendon Cook was 5th with Terry Robertson retiring on lap 4. Tom Brickley and Ted Dunford did not start, while John Muddle and Ian Black withdrew from the meeting. Brewer posted the fastest lap of 1m38.6348 (145 kph average). Lewis winning speed was 144 kph.
Race 2 on Sunday morning was a 7 lapper. Brewer and Lewis got the jump, but Lewis was to retire with oil pressure problems. This left Brewer on his own with Tom Brickley and Craig Dawson chasing him to the line. Brian Burman was again 4th with Cook 5th. Dunford and Robertson failed to finish. Brewer set the fastest lap of 1m36.6534 (146 kph) and his race average was 143 kph.
Race 3 Sunday afternoon under threatening skies saw the first start red flagged. From the first start Brickley was Black-flagged for jumping the start and as the race was restarted he missed it still arguing with race officials. Brewer lead away with a hard charging Ted Dunford from the back hot on his heals. Burman was 3rd with Cook 4th. Robertson was the final finisher. Craig Dawson retired. Brewer again fastest with a 1m35.2894 (148 kph) and a race average of 144 kph.
So off to Wakefield Park in Goulburn for the round 2. Hopefully teams will be able to fix the mechanical gremlins before the race meeting. See you there.
