AUSTRALIA'S FASTEST RACING CARS HEAD TO NORTHERN TERRITORY AS CITY OF DARWIN F3 SUPERPRIX ANNOUNCED
The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship will race in the Northern Territory for the next three years after today announcing a new major race and a long-term plan to bring further overseas interest to this international category.
Formula 3 has produced 19 of the 24 drivers in this year's Formula 1 World Championship, including Mark Webber and the new World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
The inaugural City of Darwin F3 SuperPrix will be contested at the SKYCITY Triple Crown, Event 6, 2011 V8 Supercars Championship 17 -19 June Hidden Valley DARWIN.
Northern Territory Major Events General Manager Paul Cattermole and Formula 3 Australia Chairman Ian Richards agreed to terms yesterday for the fastest cars in the country to race on the Hidden Valley circuit.
'This is exciting news for race fans and the Northern Territory. We have a fantastic race circuit in Darwin and we promote the NT to the rest of the world. To have an international racing formula building bridges into Asia and Europe is highly significant', Paul Cattermole said.
In the first year of the agreement a strong grid of drivers will compete for the Australian Drivers Championship and the CAMS Gold Star, with Formula 3 Australia already planning for international drivers and vehicles, primarily from the Asia-Pacific region, to race in 2012.
This long term objective will have the City of Darwin F3 Superprix at Darwin's Hidden Valley as a 'Must Win' event on the regional open-wheel calendar.
'We are delighted to be brining the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship to Darwin for the first time', Formula 3 Chairman Ian Richards said.
"The track is perfectly suited to our cars, with its long straight allowing for slipstreaming and plenty of overtaking opportunities. It will be a spectacular show and we are all looking forward to working with Paul and the Northern Territory Major Events team to continue to build their truly outstanding event.
"The Skycity Triple Crown is an outstanding round of the V8 Supercar Championship and offers our competitors a high profile event at a magnificent venue with atmosphere galore. This will be a major 'marquee' race in Championship", he added.
Formula 3 cars will carry the Northern Territory flag throughout the 2011 season in recognition of the City of Darwin F3 Superprix.
