Great atmosphere and close racing
For a long time, the German Formula 3 fraternity has been looking forward to this weekend: the undisputed season highlight of the calendar, held from 23rd to 25th May. In the support programme of the legendary Nurburgring 24-Hour Race, the ATS Formula 3 Cup is going to hold the fifth and sixth rounds of its 2008 season. And even if not all the 200,000 motor-racing enthusiasts that are expected to attend the event will watch the young guns' efforts, the Formula 3 series may look forward to a massive crowd.
"Our appearances in the ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race support programme always have been something very special," reveals ATS Formula 3 Cup organiser Bertram Schafer. "It is nice and helpful that we and the event's organisers, ADAC Nordrhein, are united by a friendship providing us with this opportunity." The extent of the co-operation also is demonstrated by the extensive involvement of Formula 3 in the Adenauer Racing Day. Following spectacular demonstration laps in the city, several Formula 3 drivers will stop right in front of the stage to be interviewed, there.
Still, the on-track action will represent the main focus, for Germany's fastest single-seater series. And when it comes to the racing, the situation couldn't be more thrilling. With four rounds contested, the championship leader lies just ten points ahead of the sixth-placed driver. Three drivers could secure race wins and drivers from seven different countries currently hold the top-ten positions. Consequently, the two rounds at the Nurburgring promise to be extremely exciting.
Matteo Chinosi in particular has to be careful. In the first two rounds, the Italian scored 18 points but at Oschersleben, he had to settle for adding just six points to his tally. Therefore, Gerhard Tweraser has closed in on the leader. With two wins and a fastest race lap under his belt, the Austrian lies just three points behind, now. While Sebastian Saavedra seems to become the fastest-lap king: to date, the Colombian has secured three pole positions and set two fastest race laps. Being third place in the championship, he also may hope for taking the lead, in the Eifel.
Still, Frederic Vervisch also wants to do so. The 2007 runner-up scores regularly but still is waiting for his first win in the 2008 season. At Oschersleben, he was defeated by Johnny Cecotto with just three more laps to go.
In the ATS Formula 3 Trophy, the action is just as exciting. Here, Bernd Herndhofer succeeded in opening a small gap on his chasers by regularly scoring a lot of points. But two greedy drivers, Italy's Massimo Rossi and Herndhofer's compatriot Marco Oberhauser, are keen on steeling the Austrian's lead.
Altogether, you may expect to witness a lot of thrilling race action, in the fifth and sixth rounds of the season. A perfect basis for the ATS Formula 3 Cup season highlight.
