It's just about gathering experience - and nothing else
The ATS Formula 3 Cup teams and drivers are in particularly great demand, this year. Three of them made a guest appearance on the Formula 3 Euro Series grid, this weekend at the Hockenheimring. As the number of Formula 3 Euro Series entries currently is rather limited, the series and the German Formula 3 Association, the organisers of the ATS Formula 3 Cup, came to an agreement about several guest appearances
This chance was used by Jo Zeller, who made the trip together with his son, as well as the Motopark-Academy represented by their driver Jimmy Eriksson. Furthermore, the Euro Series weekend also was contested by Team China Sonangol and their driver Luis Sa Silva.
As the cars raced in the two Formula 3 series represent different specs, making a fair lap-time comparison is impossible. Consequently, the guest appearance represented just practice and preparation for the continuation of the battle for ATS Formula 3 Cup points and wins, for the Cup teams and drivers. "The guys are supposed to gather additional experience, complete additional laps and contest additional races in the Formula 3 car," explained Motopark Team Principal Timo Rumpfkeil. "Furthermore, this weekend offered them the chance of familiarising themselves with the Hockenheimring."
Jo Zeller also regarded the event as test. "It was obvious that we wouldn't be able to match the pace of the frontrunners," revealed the Swiss Team Principal. "But it was a really instructive experience for Sandro. Despite the fact that adapting to the control tyres used in the Formula 3 Euro Series proved to be anything but easy." Nonetheless, Sandro Zeller succeeded in surprising his father slightly, with his good lap times. "And in race two he demonstrated that he can deliver in fine style when not being hampered by traffic," beamed the proud father.
At the end of the day, however, this weekend's Euro Series guest racers will keep on focusing on the ATS Formula 3 Cup. In just a few days, Germany's fastest single seater series will hold its next race weekend. At the Sachsenring, representing a true challenge for every racing driver, the 24-car ATS Formula 3 Cup field will contest the third and fourth rounds of the 2010 season.
