Quick lady in Formula 3: Rahel Frey with Volkswagen power
Wolfsburg. A quick lady at the wheel of a Volkswagen: Rahel Frey from Switzerland starts to the new ATS Formula 3 Cup Germany at Hockenheim next weekend (25-27 April) with Volkswagen power. The 22-year-old youngster and the Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, who is only 17, make up the driver squad of Van Amersfoort Racing, the title defender in the leading German formula racing series.
"Rahel Frey and Laurens Vanthoor are the first two talented youngsters to contest the Formula 3 Cup with Volkswagen power - together with the strong team of Frits van Amersfoort, this is a promising combination," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "In the area of promoting young talent the ATS Formula 3 Cup plays an important part: it provides a favourably priced link between the ADAC Formula Masters powered by Volkswagen for rookies and the Formula 3 Euro Series, which is the crucial stepping stone towards Formula 1."
Rahel Frey can hardly wait for her Formula 3 debut: "I'm looking forward to an exciting season. I want to sincerely thank Volkswagen and Van Amersfoort for their confidence in me," says the petite female racer from Aedermannsdorf in the canton of Solothurn, who most recently contested the international Formula Masters, is a member of the Swiss national team in the A1GP racing series and has even tested the Audi A4 DTM.
For Laurens Vanthoor, who has switched from the compact racing kart to the 210-hp Volkswagen Dallara, the step is much bigger: "After my time in kart racing, ascending to the Formula 3 Cup is a great opportunity. Everything is new for me - the car, the circuits and the field of about 30 rivals. This will be a thrilling year and I'm proud to be part of the action with Van Amersfoort and Volkswagen," says the rookie from Hasselt.
ATS Formula 3 Cup - the powerful second league
Alongside the internationally positioned Formula 3 Euro Series, in which Volkswagen supplies engines for eight vehicles for the first time this year - and immediately clinched as many as two podium positions at the season opener - the ATS Formula 3 Cup continues the long-standing German Formula 3 tradition. The Cup's distinguishing aspects: youngsters ascending from kart and formula racing are offered an interesting platform with numerous advantages. Chassis from different model years, from 1999 forwards, as well as races which are primarily staged in Germany enable favourably priced yet professional motorsport. This year's schedule includes nine events, each featuring two 25-minute races.
