Double podium for Nico Verdonck on Eurospeedway
The impressive Eurospeedway in the Lausitz region was the scene for the fifth round of the German ATS Formula 3 Cup. Nico Verdonck arrived at the circuit with a lot of ambition. And that was justified. The Belgian driver showed once again his abilities and driving skills. Not only did he score important points in the battle for the championship. He also finished on the rostrum twice after two formidable races.
During a thrilling qualifying session, Nico set twice the third fastest time and was only two tenths of a second away from pole. However, achieving a good result like he did wasn't an easy task: "There were lots of yellow flags and therefore it was difficult to find a free lap without being penalised for driving too fast under yellow. I gave everything during qualifying and in the end it payed off."
Starts are always spectacular on the Eurospeedway and that was no different during the races of the German Formula 3 Cup. With four, sometimes five cars alongside in race 1, the field headed towards the first turn. While Nico chased after Vietoris and Vervisch into turn one, there was an accident behind them. The Safety Car had to come out. Nico made a perfect restart afterwards and closed in on Vietoris. Lap after lap he put a lot of pressure on the German. In the end, Vietoris couldn't hold the pressure and spun right in front of Nico. "Vietoris spun in the third turn, went onto the grass and I could only avoid him by inches. I finished in second place, so all the hard work payed off", the happy Kyphon-driver told afterwards. JB Motorsport celebrated its second double victory of the season! In Oschersleben earlier this year, Nico won in apocalyptic circumstances in front of his team mate Vervisch.
In race 2 Nico took Vietoris on. JB's number one drive looked for an opportunity to pass his rival at the start. What followed was an immense battle that lasted for twenty laps. Nico pushed the envelope. In the penultimate lap, Nico tried another passing manoeuvre, but this time Vietoris closed the door brutally and defended his position by all means. Nico came home in third, but can look back at the weekend with contentment. "I'm very happy. The team proved to dispose of a good and competitive car. With the Lola B06/30 we're certainly in a position to win races", Verdonck said. In the championship standings, Nico is again closing in on the second place. He reduced the gap to only eight points.
The next races will take place on the TT-circuit in Assen in course of the Rizla Racing Day, an event that traditionally attracts thousands of enthusiastic visitors. "A difficult task is awaiting us there, because we don't know the track. But we come in a strong position from the Lausitz weekend, so we must be able to continue our strong performances during the next weekend."
Rendezvous in Assen on the 10th, 11th and 12th of August.
