HASSELT, Laurens Vanthoor has signed a contract for 2008 with Van Amersfoort Racing to take part in the strong ATS Formula 3 Cup. The young Belgian driver will make his official debut in the series at the season opener on April 25-27 on the Hockenheim circuit in Germany. Vanthoor will be starting in a Dallara F306 chassis powered by a Volkswagen engine. With his move to Van Amersfoort Racing Vanthoor has automatically become a works Volkswagen driver.
Laurens Vanthoor is without a doubt one of the youngest talents coming from the Belgian karting scene. Not only is he fast, but above all he is a passionate driver and intensively occupied with the sport.
Young Vanthoor has had many successes in several karting championships during his career so far. In 2005 he was the Junior champion in Belgium and won the title in the French championship. The promising talent from Heusden-Zolder in Belgium secured a works deal with CRG thanks to these results. Vanthoor also managed to do well in the Belgian, European and World championships. The results set by Vanthoor did not go unnoticed. In the winter period he tested a Formula 3 car for Van Amersfoort Racing on the Ascar Race Resort in Ronda, Spain. After several successful tests for the Dutch squad the 16 year old will now make the step up into the German Formula 3 championship.
His team manager is a more than respected person. Frits van Amersfoort, who has been carrying the autosport virus with him for more than thirty years now, has had many successes in the Formula 3. With Belgian driver Bas Leinders he won the Formula 3 title in 1998, while a then still young Christijan Albers managed to win two races in his debut season. Drivers like Jos Verstappen and Ho-Pin Tung have learned their racing skills at Van Amersfoort Racing. Carlo van Dam clinched the ATS Formula 3 Cup title in 2007 in an impressive style. An ideal stepping stone for Vanthoor to the highest ranks in autosport.
LAURENS VANTHOOR: "I am really happy to race in the ATS Formula 3 Cup this year. After my time in karting this is a great new challenge. A Formula 3 car is a completely different car because due to the wings it has a lot of down force. Especially in the corners you are going much faster. The brakes and the performance of the engine are impressive. I must admit that I was amazed that I was able to adapt myself so quickly to the car after only one test. The German Formula 3 Cup is a great championship with over 30 drivers at the start. After my tests in Formula 3 it was perfectly clear for me that I wanted to work with Van Amersfoort Racing. We worked together quite well and with the experience that Frits has in Formula 3 I can learn a lot. I was able to do a lot of testing in the last couple of months to get myself fully prepared for the start of the first race at Hockenheim. I can hardly wait for it. I would like to thank my sponsors for this great opportunity, which I will grab with both hands!"
