Another strong score for Laurens Vanthoor in German F3 Championship
HOCKENHEIM. The German F3 championship held its third meeting of the season this weekend, and all teams headed off to Hockenheim for another two race event. Following on from the weekend in Hockenheim Laurens Vanthoor now has three victories to his name in the German F3 championship out of a total of six races. The young driver, based in the Limburg, won the weekend's second race, having finished in second spot in the first race. With his two second places and three wins Vanthoor is leading the championship, with a seven points lead over his nearest rival Stef Dusseldorp, who is also his team-mate at Van Amersfoort Racing.
During the first qualifying session Laurens Vanthoor clocked up an excellent second place, notwithstanding the fact that the young VW- team driver was not entirely happy.
Laurens Vanthoor: "I could have grabbed pole and I was well away in my fast lap, but traffic encountered in the last bend resulted in me coming second. But the car was perfect, which means that we'll be up there in the race." The following morning during the second wet session Laurens Vanthoor took his revenge. In wet conditions the young Belgian clinched a highly impressive pole position.
Laurens Vanthoor admitted that the set-up on his Dallara F3 was exceptionally good, as he set off for the start grid with high expectations for the first race. He gives us his own commentary as from the moment the lights turned to green:
"To be honest my race was over in the first lap. I had a good start and I was up next to Suzuki. But suddenly Monien appeared from nowhere; he had made a jumpstart, and took over the lead. I tried to catch him - even though he wasn't meant to be there - , I hit a rough patch and slid off for a moment. This allowed Stef Dusseldorp and Rafael Suzuki to overtake me. I still managed to end the race in second place, finishing a mere fraction from overall victory."
During the second race of the weekend Laurens Vanthoor didn't give his opponents a chance. On a damp track he soon built up a lead and no one was able to come close. "And the race was cut short due to a rainstorm. I had a relatively easy finish, scoring a second and first place here in Hockenheim. I can't say that it wasn't a good weekend, but it still wasn't perfect. I'm really looking for that perfect weekend where everything slots into place as hoped for."
The following meeting will be held on 20th and 21st June, during the FIA GT visit to Oschersleben.
