Laurens Vanthoor lives perfect weekend in ATS F3 Cup - Assen
ASSEN - HOLLAND. This weekend, the ATS F3 Cup left Germany for a meeting on the famous Dutch track of Assen. The sixth meeting of the season took place on the Moto GP track in the north of Holland and championship leader Laurens Vanthoor showed himself very motivated before the weekend. And the Belgian youngster again proved to be a real talent by scoring both pole positions on Friday, a seventh win of the season on Saturday, an eight of the season on Sunday, with both fastest laps in the races on top. For the first time this season, Laurens Vanthoor scored the maximum of 24 points.
Before the race meeting in Assen the official website of the German F3 championship was clear: "No doubt: Laurens Vanthoor is on the way to securing the 2009 title. With 96 points on his tally, the 18- year old from Zolder is the dominant ATS Formula 3 Cup Championship leader. Last year, 120 points (as has Vanthoor after Assen!) were enough for Frederic Vervisch to win the title. So, Vanthoor soon could follow the footsteps of his compatriot."
"But from now on, I'll avoid any risk in order to become champion as soon as possible. Maybe I'll race at 99%, because scoring as many points as possible is now my prior target", explained Laurens Vanthoor before the weekend. On Friday the member of the RACB National Team took both pole- positions. "I had a fair good run in both sessions and on this track it is rather important to start ahead of the field. So I'm very happy with the result."
Laurens Vanthoor also won the first race of the Dutch weekend of the ATS F3 Cup in Assen. In the sixth meeting of the year, the young Belgian scored his seventh win of the season, in front of his teammate Stef Dusseldorp.
Laurens Vanthoor: "It was not my most difficult victory, despite a long safety car period between the 10th and 20th minute of the race. I tried to control and secured my first place, especially in order to maintain my lead in the championship."
Laurens Vanthoor also won he second race of the weekend, almost a copy of race 1 with a good start, a fine lead followed by another safety car period and finally a well-deserved win. "I'm very happy with this win as our team had many guests, the grandstand was really crowded and last but not least I scored my first hattrick, with two poles, two best laps in the race and two victories...", smiles a delighted Vanthoor.
After 12 of the 18 races Vanthoor now has a 53 points lead on his closest rival, Stef Dusseldorp. He has won eight races and claimed nine pole positions.
The following meeting of the ATS F3 Cup is being held on 22nd and 23rd of August on the Nurburgring during the weekend of the LMS 1000 Km.
