Joey Foster back in the ATS Formula 3 Cup
In less than a fortnight, at the Sachsenring, Joey Foster will make his ATS Formula 3 Cup comeback. The 26-year old Briton who currently holds the lead in the Australian Formula 3 Championship is going to race the Dallara Volkswagen No 8 entered by Team Performance Racing.
"I'm convinced that Joey is going to be quick right away and I know that our team can benefit from his experience," says Team Principal Bobby Issazadhe. Nonetheless, Joey Foster will have to cope with a difficult task as he neither knows the Volkswagen engine nor the Sachsenring. At the same time, the German Formula 3 scene knows the Briton as a fast racer. In 2006 he caused a stir in the ATS Formula 3 Cup until an accident at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz made a sudden end to his impressive season: in the practice session of the EuroSpeedway weekend he crashed backwards into the concrete wall and while his Lola B06-30 Opel was only slightly damaged, Joey suffered a fracture of the third lumbar vertebra. Four operations were necessary to mend the injury of the man who held the second position in the championship at that point in time - and his season was over.
The accident meant a sudden dip for Joey Foster's career. He had been involved in a close battle for the championship with the future Champion, Ho-Pin Tung. Up to the accident, the Briton had won for races and his Chinese rival five, with Joey Foster having set six fastest race laps and Ho-Pin Tung three. In the years 2007 and 2008 he had to make do with sporadic race appearances, GT and Formula 3 tests - and contested the 2008 Le Mans 24-Hour Race. In 2009, however, he is truly back and contests the full Australian Formula 3 Championship season
Joey Forster has been motor racing since 1995. He secured numerous titles in national kart categories before moving up to Formula Ford in 2000. In both 2003 and 2004 he won the extremely difficult and much-noticed Formula Ford Festival. After having impressed in the American Formula Ford by finishing runner-up in the 2005 championship, the McLaren promoted young gun contested the 2006 ATS Formula 3 Cup season - up to the fateful accident on 28th April at the EuroSpeedway's oval circuit.
Joey Foster and Team Performance Racing have been cooperating for a long time. Joey executed his first Formula 3 test for the squad back in 2003 and in 2007, during his rehab, he worked as driver advisor for the squad based in the Silverstone Technology Park.
