Tiago Monteiro Guarantees The Pole Position At Zolder
The Portuguese Driver established a new Circuit Record Lap
Tiago Monteiro's debut at Zolder (Belgium) in the World Series by Nissan, couldn't have been more positive, with the Portuguese Driver being the centre of attentions in the qualifying session for the 1st race, by guarantying the Pole Position and establishing a new Circuit Record Lap. A controversial qualifying session for the 2nd race, pushed Tiago Monteiro from a temporary Pole Position to a 3rd place in the starting grid.
The Official F1 Minardi Test Driver's strategy for the 1st qualifying session reverted to a late track entrance, at 12 minutes from the finish, thereby securing not to get caught in traffic and taking the most out of the tyres. "It all went very well. I chose to make a late entrance in order to guarantee to take the most out of the tyres and make a clean lap. I only drove 6 laps in this session, and on the 5th, with the tyres at the ideal temperature and no one ahead of me, I decided to push hard and give my best shot. I am very happy with the result and with the work developed by my Team, since this was my first experience at the Zolder Circuit." Stated the Portuguese Driver.
In the qualifying session for the second race, Tiago Monteiro was in the Pole Position, when an accident red flagged the drivers and interrupted the session. The Portuguese Driver had secured the temporary Pole Position, even though he had to suspend the session while performing his 4th of 6 laps, when the car tyres are in their ideal condition. Once restarted, Tiago Monteiro respected the yellow flags showed by the commissaries, which indicated the presence of some crashed formulas on track, and took the foot out of the gas pedal, such as stated in the racing rules. At the same time, some of his direct adversaries took advantage of the situation and chose to accelerate, managing to obtain some best marks, pushing Tiago Monteiro to a 5th position. At the end of the qualifying session, the Portuguese Driver's Team, Carlin Motorsports, contested what happened and managed to guarantee the recognition of some irregularities by the entities in charge. Therefore, Tiago Monteiro secured the 3rd place on the qualifying session for the 2nd race this Sunday at Zolder.
Tiago Monteiro commented "I was sorry that the qualifying session for the 2nd race had to suffer two interruptions, since it prevented me from doing a flying lap. Nevertheless, I am very happy with our performance today and I believe that a Pole Position, a new Circuit Record Lap and a 3rd place on the starting grid is amazing considering that I had never raced at Zolder before.
