Karthikeyan quickest in Zolder practice.
Carlin Motorsport team-mates Narain Karthikeyan and Bruce Jouanny were quickest in Friday practice for round two of the Superfund World Series by Nissan at Jarama.
Karthikeyan set a best lap of 1m21.853s during the first of the two sessions, and with rain dampening the track before the start of the second period, it was good enough to leave him at the head of the times.
Team boss Trevor Carlin said: "Narain felt he could have done a 1m21.5s had he not made a mistake in the hairpin. It has been a good day for us and we're really pleased with the job Bruce did, too."
Jouanny was just under 0.2s slower than his team-mate, but unlike Karthikeyan he set his best time with new tyres. His former British Formula 3 rival Heikki Kovalainen was third fastest, a position he also took in the wet second session.
Kovalainen's Gabord Competicion team-mate, and championship leader, Franck Montagny set the pace in the latter session, using slick tyres on the drying track to record a best lap of 1m23.690s.
Local hero Bas Leinders was second fastest for Racing Engineering, and is confident of a strong showing this weekend.
He said: "We've made a lot of progress since the last round at Jarama. A bit of local knowledge is helping me at the moment, but I believe we can challenge for a good result."
RC Motorsport's new signing, Brazilian Carlos Pereira, made an impressive start to his World Series career by setting the fourth best time in the second session, although he blotted his copybook with a spin late on that left he beached at Turn 1.
Williams Formula 1 tester Marc Gene felt he benefited from testing since the last round at Jarama and despite being only 18th and 16th in the two sessions, is hoping for a repeat of his podium finish at round one.
Former Arrows F1 driver, Enrique Bernoldi, who has switched from RC to GD Racing, was fifth quickest in first practice and eighth in the second.
